Rachel
Maloney

Unknown

Through portraiture and figurative painting, Rachel’s work explores the concepts of youth, friendship and the culture that surrounds them. By interacting and connecting with the generation of youth today, a series of paintings are developed. The iconic image of the smiley face, which has been around since the 1960s is powerful in its simple appearance. The image has often been associated with youth and has been used as a symbol of rave culture and various fashion statements. Now in our generation of youth today the smiley face is used as an emoticon to communicate through social media.

The virtual reality that is created by the use of social media and the use of a screen generates a different environment for users to communicate and present themselves to others. By using the iconic image of the smiley face as a mask for her friends in the paintings, Rachel is establishing the idea of the screen becoming a mask, to be unidentified and anonymous in an alien or virtual environment. In doing so Rachel is creating her own imaginary environments, much like a screen, within the paintings she creates.
