Because We’re Worth It

Roisin O’Sullivan’s artistic practice focuses on the portrayals of female beauty that prevails in popular culture. Fashion and beauty magazines have been a key resource element throughout the course of the project. However, the seemingly ‘perfect’ images that appear in these magazines are in fact, digital constructs and most have been enhanced with props and computer techniques. This digitally constructed notion is what intrigued O’Sullivan the most and, in her work, digital elements are highlighted and exaggerated. Pixilation and other forms of digital glitches are incorporated into the work, sometimes in a crude manner by covering facial features and parts of the female body. This is particularly evident in the series of embroidered images. Although these images may look pretty with brightly coloured threads and different patterns, there is also an underlying sinister aspect. This is mainly due to the surgical stitching process where the faces are covered over with threads that have been pierced in through the skin.
