Between the Spirit and the Skin
The term uncanny refers to a feeling or experience that is simultaneously familiar and unfamiliar, I think this is also a perfect description for mental illness, your mind which is your home becomes a strange yet familiar entity. My work is an autobiographical exploration of my struggles with mental illnesses, including depression, anxiety and psychosis. I use drawing as a basis for all of my work and am influenced by the uncanny, the abject, the domestic and religious paintings and sculptures. I use domestic materials such as ceramics, wallpaper and embroidery to create a homely atmosphere but subvert them with the dark nature of the drawings creating a feeling of Unhomeliness.
