Intertwining Identity

Jennifer Shaughnessy’s work explores the concept of female identity. Hair has been a very important feature within her pieces due to its relationship to the female figure, the abject and in this case the concealment of one’s identity. Using a simplistic line Jennifer develops a character that is biographical yet universal and through this character expresses the psychological, political and social activities among various women.

Storytelling and narrative have always been important in Jennifer Shaughnessy’s work and her interest in fairytales, folklore and myths have fuelled her inspiration for her practice. By researching the concepts of the archetype of the wild woman and the monstrous feminine Jennifer analyses the primitive and the animality boundaries within the counter stereotype of the female.

Throughout the year Jennifer’s work has consisted of experiments with drawing, etching, silkscreen, animation and embroidery.
