THE PAST IS A FOREIGN COUNTRY

“The past is a foreign country. They do things differently there.”

The immortal opening to LP Hartley’s The Go Between, describes what I have sought to address in my work. A box of old negatives newly accessible, offers an insight into the past. My phone provides me with an ever increasing record of the present. I am the go between, addressing issues of cultural and collective identity spanning three generations.

My paintings invite the viewer to reflect on absence and presence, through images evoking the past and the present. What truths, if any, can be gleaned from a fleeting second?
