STATIC

This work in broad terms deals with mass media, with this digital sphere now so present in our daily lives. I re-simulate and re-interpret this digital sphere through the medium of painting – through this asking what is painting in an environment where we are constantly bombarded with imagery. There is a certain intrigue at how painting can respond to a digitized image and brings forward the idea to scrutinize the televisual of its transient and everyday imagery.

Alongside my work I have been reading on the theories of Marshall McLuhan. McLuhan proposes that a medium itself, not the content it holds, should be the focus of study. Television, to me, is becoming increasingly less relevant. Turned on as a comfort, more as a background visual and noise than something I truly pay direct attention to anymore. This project pays particular homage to the analogue television. This type of television is quickly becoming outdated and so witnessing the static screen and audio is becoming far less frequent. The work draws particular attention to the television in static state.
