“….I hope she’ll be a fool- that’s the best thing a girl can be in this world a beautiful little fool.” Daisy Buchanan , The Great Gatsby
Through researching historical eras as seen in The Great Gatsby and taking inspiration from the styles surrounding the 1920’s onwards, my work is attempting to investigate female identity and how our social environment has influenced modern representations of women.
My work engages with the aesthetic beauty of a woman, using images that illustrate the way one should look. By creating a stereotypical representation of what it means to be female, I am highlighting the false sense of identity established through these set ideals portrayed in advertising.
I am interested in fragmenting these images and abstracting the figure by using different processes such as printing, painting and photography, manipulating sections to either erase or change the physical features deemed to be desirable.
