LEST WE FORGET

The activity of making a quilt created its own community around it – bringing people together, creating heirlooms for the future. The generational passing on of creative processes and skills, the re- using of the merest scrap of precious fabric or a last remnant served as a way of preserving a craft and keeping a memory. Old became new.

The sense of fellowship was an important part of the experience, ultimately the aspect of my research that came to interest me most. The bringing together
of small pieces, the bonding together of fabric mirroring the blending of the group of makers.

Reflecting on a combination of contemporary
and eclectic elements, etiquette and a sense of occasion, I have stitched together a new expression of matter and material, drawing the viewer into the past lest they forget the importance of this kind of connection.
