‘Code-Switch’ is a printed publication that explores the concept of code-switching and its impact on language, culture and society through the influence of technology, trends and social media.
The term code-switching refers to a person changing languages or dialects throughout a single conversation and sometimes even over the course of a single sentence. This phenomenon has always been very common among bilingual families and communities but is becoming more prevalent today due to globalisation and the influence of media. As the popularity of social media rises and further technological advancement occur, more and more languages are being anglicised and with that, sparking debates on the integration and misuse of English in other languages. Where some might see code-switching as a positive linguistic connection being made throughout the world, others view it as a power symbol and the suppression of minor languages and cultures.
By presenting both viewpoints, this publication ultimately allows the reader to determine for themselves whether they believe code-switching represents the future of language.
