Before We Knew About the Clouds

Cyan O’Sullivan’s work focuses on a relationship between the Irish Landscape and the spectator. Giving new life to found surfaces and manipulating oils and mediums, Cyan’s paintings depict a fragmented walk through her daily life, attempting to evoke feelings of liminality, sublime, and our psychological relationship to the environment that surrounds us.

‘Before We Knew About the Clouds’ delineates a moment of pause during a hike in the Wicklow mountains where the artist hails from. The title alludes to Irish artist Sean Hillen whose recent intimate documentary reveals a moving scene of him sitting on his doorstep day in and day out, observing and photographing the clouds, while discussing his interest in weather-related conspiracy theories. ‘The Watch’ is a fragment taken from the film The Wonder, written by Emma Donoghue, that is also set in the Wicklow Mountains and has acted as a profound source of inspiration for Cyan throughout this project.
