Sheela: The Power of the Feminine
Amelia’s work is an investigation into the divine feminine connection to nature and the landscape influenced by ancient Ireland. Namely the Sheela-na-gig statues of the female form which hands emphasize their hands exposing their genitals found all over Ireland. Through painting and sculpture, she intends to highlight their significance and how they are too deeply intertwined with Irish Culture to be disregarded. Sheela represents divine energy and the ‘neart’ which permeates all life. Using soft fabric, Amelia attempts to humanize these stone female figures often seen as ‘crude’ or ‘witch-like’ to highlight the ritualistic rubbing associated with their worship and creating a sensory experience for the viewer.
Through research into Irish folklore and mythology, she decided to enlarge the scale to create this giant Sheela Goddess which refuses to be ignored! Through painting she explores the unique posing, exaggerated features, and the undeniable character the different Sheela-na-gigs possess. She invites you to venture to a time where and the female body was revered and celebrated.
