Water Under Ground is a print publication designed to explore the growth of far-right extremism in the Irish context, specifically through the lens of the Dublin riot that happened on November 23 2023. It offers a combination of depth and levity in its commentary. The title phrase is derived from the Irish “uisce faoi thalamh” – an idiom for conspiracy, intrigue and secret going-ons. The publication looks at the growing anti-immigration sentiment in Ireland, lax content moderation rules on social media, far-right conspiracy theories, etc.
It’s a 36-page publication printed on 80gsm bright recycled paper, with each spread representing a half-hour on social media on the day of the riot. 18 posts from X are presented on bright yellow post-it notes to highlight how incendiary posts online
play a part in exacerbating and inciting public disturbances. A scattered typographic technique was used to reflect the chaotic and unsettling nature of the riot. Design choices such as tightly cropping headings and using bold and dramatic typ, were also used to create tension and evoke a sense of unease.
