The First Woman

The First Woman is a book that follows the journey of Vigdís Finnbogadóttir. In 1980, Finnbogadóttir became the world’s first democratically elected female President and would go on to serve as President of Iceland for 16 years. While in office she completed phenomenal work, particularly in the areas of culture and language, women and children and the environment.

Focusing particularly on her work for the women of Iceland and the world, this book follows the journey of Vigdís, from the Women’s Day Off protest of 1975 to the work she continues to do for women post presidency. Using the combination of letterpress and serif type to create a feminine yet strong tone of voice; and with a colour palette that pays respect to both Iceland and femininity, this book visually explores the inspiring story of Vigdís Finnbogadóttir.
