Continual Remembrance
My practice explores memories of personal significance and the layers that encompass them such as time, location and image, both preserving and changing personal memories. The concept behind the work is informed by an obsessive return to and remembrance of memories, and by contemporary artists and essayists working in the field of memory and time. Such as Gerard Richter, Anselm Kiefer, Siegfried Kraucer, Brian Dillon, Michael Newman, and Paul Ricoeur. The large scale mechanical pencil drawings are focused on the line as a vessel containing memories. With thoughts becoming layered, dates, coordinates and times reference moments from the past. The etchings and drypoints are centered on the idea of etching a memory in time to preserve it. The analogue medium format and large format pinhole prints comprise a series of photographs taken in Limerick, in places that hold memories of importance. Focused around the concept of film photography as a process which is subject to time and the marks made by hand. Exploring the pinhole camera as an device which exposes negatives by accumulating light over time, which is exposed to the air and other elements in the location. This is reinforced by the time spent printing in the darkroom.
