Michelle McCormack aims to empower women through her work. She is influenced by feminist protest, comic books and the idea of the female warrior. McCormack has many influences when it comes to her aesthetic such as Tank Girl, Bitch Planet and Red Sonia.
To date she has been driven and inspired by the women in her life. She has witnessed first-hand the difficulties they face and have faced in the past because of their gender. This has raised many questions for her over the last few years on gender imbalance and she has sought to find solutions through her project.
McCormack’s current avenue of investigation is to redefine the term ‘ladylike’. She encourages women to empower themselves and others and to not let gender stereotypes define them. She is influenced by not only feminism but various forms of protest and activism. She derives inspiration from protests and social movements both in the present and throughout history. McCormack’s work is not only artwork but art activism.
