Starting with site visits to Shanakyle bog and Limerick Waterways, Rebecca found herself drawn to the abandonment of objects across the waterways and how nature overtook the abandoned Irish cottages by the bog. This put attention onto her grandmother’s house, which has stood as a testament to the beautiful life and love that once filled it. Reflecting on a poignant moment on the day she passed, where the turf in the range refused to light, Rebecca saw this as the house saying goodbye to her grandmother. Being unable to have a proper goodbye with her grandmother due to lockdowns, this project was an opportunity for her to provide family, friends, and strangers the chance to leave nothing unsaid with their lost loved ones. Using a mix of old and new family photographs, graphic illustrations and text; themes of reminiscence, memory, and our connection to others are explored. By blocking out the figure, it reminds the viewer of someone who has been removed from their life. The text brings to light the life that was once present and their importance in the lives of their loved ones. By blending these elements together, Rebecca portrays the versatility of nostalgia and grief through her practice
