The Dance

“In my entire career, there has never been a single artistic flop. Bankrupt we may have been, but never artistically” Sergei Diaghilev.

The ballet The Rite of Spring (Le Sacre du Printemps) based on a Russian pagan ritual in which a ‘chosen one’ is sacrificed in appeasement of the Gods to ensure the return of Spring, represents an analogy for the life of Sergei Diaghilev. The Rite of Spring and Diaghilev’s life serves as a metaphor for the human pursuit of self-fulfilment in following their passion notwithstanding the cost.

Working in ceramics exploring the human figure through gesture, movement, and expression I aim to capture the essence of this dance of life with its inherent challenges and promise of bliss.
