Kissin’ Twist
‘Kissin’ Twist’ is a collection inspired by my grandparents, my grandfather’s jazz band and the music scene they both loved to go out in during the 50s and 60s. From my grandfather’s jazz band poster and the caricatures that portrayed the energetic atmosphere from when they performed, I was inspired to create custom prints and twisting techniques to build drama and playfulness from the dances in my collection. I worked closely with stand work to capture that moment, when a spinning dress layers and twists around the body. Layers of pleats created on the stand give a twisting illusion, a twirling movement frozen in the moment. Mixing patterns and layering prints with 50’s style polka dots to flow with the changing upbeat rhythms of music portrays the lively atmosphere of the collection. Custom printed figures from the Jazz band poster, hand appliqued to each garment, dance among the rich red satin, delicate feminine pinks and men’s pinstripe. This represents a warm embrace and whirling connection among the lively twisting and turning in the dance.
