I wanted to improve my skills in animating and concept design, and make another film that was a major improvement from the last two I made in 2nd and 3rd Year. Looking back on the previous two short films, I didn’t fully like the way they turned out and when looking at the others’ films I felt quite inadequate. Everyone else’s films looked more professional and of a very good standard and I wanted to be the same.
In terms of the story, it was based off of a David Attenborough documentary examining the hibernation pattern of bats in Canada. The bats freeze over and their metabolism shuts down, only for them to unfreeze and for their metabolism to reignite again for brief periods when they require nourishment and they go back to sleep again. As someone with an interest in science and nature, as well as being a fan of the horror genre, I wanted to make something like a horror story out of the particular idea, and how fitting to give it a title related to a scientific/wildlife inspiration.
