For my final year interior design project, I wanted to repurpose a building with a history, a character and most importantly a connection to the coast. For me, the sea is a place that offers so much peace and tranquillity for both the mind and body. The Whitethorn Gallery in Ballyvaughan in County Clare is located right on the foreshore, and it was once a fish factory then converted to a gallery and restaurant. The buildings history as a fish factory inspired my concept of seaweed. The concept of seaweed has played an influence on the curves seen throughout the design.
The building has been left unoccupied for numerous years and needs repair, but I saw how much potential this building has. As well as being situated adjacent to the Atlantic Ocean, the famous Burren landscape surrounds the area. The design ambition for this project was to create a spa with the focus to allow guests to immerse themselves in nature. Due to the unique location of the building, I wanted guests to feel like they are at one with nature even if they are inside. This design would enable the guests to take in the beauty of the surrounding environment while relaxing by the pool, looking out at the panoramic view of the sea and the Burren.
