America’s Royale 1996
My collection is based on the unsolved murder of Jonbenet Ramsey. The six year old beauty queen who was murdered in 1996. Investigating the mystery behind her death and stolen innocence. My aim was to create a collection that incorporated the mystery and conspiracy’s that surrounded the 22 year old unsolved case that stumped the nation.
I was compelled to create a collection that incorporated both masculine and feminine elements in an extremely youthful way. The collection starts off controlled and structured because her father was in the military, and the discipline that it takes to be a child beauty pageant contestant. I wanted to combine this structure and discipline with the fakeness of the pageants and costumes.
The father daughter relationship dominates the beginning of the collections story. As the story develops Jonbenet transforms into the little beauty queen. The garments begins to breakdown becoming more and more chaotic, distressed and deconstructed representing the crime of her murder.
Using royal blue twill for masculinity, duchess satins incorporating the fakeness of the costumes. Manipulating fabrics by creating a ripping, scratching effect to bring in the sinister side. I used red duchess satin and hand beaded red sequence to represent blood.
