OBSCENE IDENTITY

For my collection I was inspired by Berlin’s club scene and urban spaces. Culture shock over how free  and liberated everyone was which was inspiring to see. I have often used female empowerment and sexual identity as themes to help me create my work.

I am using traditional techniques that are used a lot in Ireland such as weaving but with an unconventional fabric like vinyl which is also associated to club wear. I want to make knitwear and textiles more contemporary and diverse breaking down that stereotype. I am also using transparent yarn in contrast with chains to represent fragility versus hard + industrial wear to symbolize empowerment and that women can be strong or/ and delicate.  The fabric in my collection is my own photography transformed into digital prints , which i shot in Berlin with its poster covered walls to the texture itself which led me to weaving. Other techniques i have used in my collection are; Domestic machine knitting, shima, weaving, fringing, embroidery, laser cutting and engraving.
