To what extent can creative art practice encourage critical discussion and engagement of how social media impacts young girls’ perception of the ‘ideal beauty and persona?
Through exploration pupil’s explored the impact of social media on young girl’s perception of the ‘ideal beauty and persona’, through investigating how social media can exploit a false perception of reality. Through this interest in their engagement on social media, it challenged pupil’s to critically think how they portray themselves on social media, but to also challenge themselves with regards to how they view and objectify other people and imagery on these platforms.
Pupils investigated and explored the ‘ideal beauty’ through the creative art practice to the production of a short film, which created awareness of how social media is impacting young teens.
The findings of the study show that the creative process was a catalyst for a deeper understanding of the subject matter. There was strong evidence that discussion was a stimulus for pupils to articulate the issue within social media and enabled critical thought and empathy. This study finds that there is significance to examining specific artist’s, as it enabled pupils to develop a deeper understating of the practices they were undertaking. At most this study highlighted how the in depth investigation of the subject matter through a means of process empowered pupils to take on the role of art activists.
