This project set out to raise environmental awareness among students at Junior Cycle level. Pollution is a problem that exists everywhere in the world. Ireland is an island, noted for its rugged, beautiful coastline. However, the coastline of this country is nothing more than an oxymoron. Beach clean-ups take place regularly across the country to sustain the Irish coastline’s majestic nature. As part of this project, a group of students undertook the task to clean their local strand and make art from the collected rubbish. Students examined contextual artwork by awareness group, Washed Ashore, and, artist, Pam Longobardi. These artists have created artworks that visually express and communicate the condition of the world in effort to address environmental issues. Working in small groups, the students made assemblage sculpture from the collected rubbish. Once finished, these pieces were photographed. Using digital image manipulation tools, the photographs of the assemblage sculptures became to premise for a poster design, whereby students had the chance to express their own environmental messages to the public, unique to that locality.
