Visual storey telling: creating a visual story book based on Irish folklore and wives’ tales that exercises a range of mixed medias and techniques
Inspired by the work of Irish Artist Michael Fortune, the work encapsulates the authentic Irish character and history of Ireland, taking stories from all ages and areas. This project looks at folklore, wives’ tales, traditions and superstitions. Students created visual story books based on folklore stories and wives’ tales that they have heard and collected from friends and family. The books capture the essence and heritage of folklore and wives’ tales that are inherent to Irish Culture. The project incorporates a range of mediums and art techniques including illustration and Dry Point Etching. The aesthetic quality of the work has been influenced by renowned Artist Quentin Blake as well as other famous illustrators that were exhibited at LUAN art gallery during this time. Students had the opportunity to explore the work of various Illustrators in order to gain a deeper understanding of the illustration process and gain awareness of particular Visual Literacy skills that are necessary in creating informed Art Work.
