Dystopian Epoch

The subject matter is motivated by one of the major problems facing our planet: pollution. As we enter a new geologic epoch called the Anthropocene, the impact of humans on earth has had a huge influence on the geology and ecosystems of the world we live in. Focusing specifically on toxic pollution, Gillen investigates the contrast between the idea of the striking and abstract beauty of these industrial wastelands with the frightening realization of the permanent damage being done to the landscape.

This body of work is created through the chemical reactions between paint, the surface and other products which is intended to mirror the toxic reactions on the environment.

The considered selection of shapes, colours and symbols associated with that of safety signs, are introduced into the work as a reminder of the hazards and dangers our planet faces.
