Half Light

Beth Nagle’s work explores the intricate links between life and death, light and darkness. She questions the space between the ‘seen’ and ‘the unseen’. This delicate theme is addressed by combining the real and the imagined, by using the representational medium of photography, in real time, to create ideas for her esoteric, abstract paintings. Inspiration is derived from within and outside of her studio space, finding beauty in the banality of her architectural environment and how it is transformed by the effect that the light of the sun has and how it creates varied and interesting shapes throughout the day.

Her work consists of hard-edged geometric structures to illustrate the material world and portrays the unknown dimension of infinity through mystical imagery. The absence of the figure and the ambiguous nature in her work invites the viewer to enter into their own perceptual journey. We exist in a frenetic world, and beneath it is a stillness. In this stillness there can be found silence which is where Nagle draws much of her inspiration. She also probes into the place of personal consciousness, influenced by her life experience and her interest in music, philosophy and film.
