Neopolis, meaning new city is the sentiment at the core of my piece. A new city with the tropes and furnishings of sci-fi since Blade Runner defined the genre in 1982. I leaned into this aesthetic to create a sense of the familiar within a non-linear narrative. As an artist, I look for the faces in the crowd and in Neopolis these faces become the focal point. These characters portray themselves with subtle motion, providing a glimpse into the life and workings of this world.
Of this world the oppressive city is as much a character, with several faces, which I’ve modelled from the idea of the megacities of today, such as the Randstad. I invite the audience to imagine this world; it’s people and their lives depicted within the cinemographs. This unconventional film provides a snapshot into a world just at the fringes of our present day.
