Dawn of the Cyber Nation

Dawn of the Cyber Nation is a short story set in the fictional American city of Sunstone. It centres around the life of George Jones, the last human member of the city’s postal service. Unbeknownst to George, his determination to care for the machines has made them an ally to him and him alone and as they link networks and join together, he has found himself as an unwitting leader of their uprising.

The story’s visual style was inspired by retro-futurist designs which were a key part of art and design in the 1950’s during the space race. It also targets the current issue of automation and the mechanisation of the world’s workforce starting from entry level jobs.

In keeping with the theme of the story, the piece is presented both traditionally and digitally. I intend to let viewers choose their own means to consume the story. While the physical comic and digital animation are not intended to compete with one-another, the reader might find they have the opportunity to interpret the story differently and, hopefully, gain a better understanding of what happens between the still panels of a comic and through the fluid motion of animation.
