The coastline of West Clare is a dynamic place, full of movement and energy. The landscape has been sculpted by the sea in the sand and fossilised in the rocks. It has been battered by the elements and slowly distorted by the geological forces at the earth’s core. It is constantly changing with the ebb and flow of the tide and there is always something new to discover.
I am interested in the interplay between the permanent and the ephemeral: the way the rocks essentially remain the same but appear different every time the sea washes over them. New forms are created as they are covered with sand, seaweed and debris, only to be transformed yet again by the next tide. I have tried to capture these fleeting moments in my handling of the clay and in it’s spontaneous reaction to being stretched, squeezed, twisted and torn. It is the turbulent, expressive energy of this natural world that fascinates me and my work aims to reflect some of it’s mercurial essence.
