By the Window

Selina Sofia Viitanen is a visual artist born and raised in a small rural town in Finland. Her practice is informed by her personal philosophies on the meaning of human existence. She reflects on the experiences of a young person living amid the housing crisis in Ireland. Her research explores deeper into the themes of housing insecurity and its connection to vacant housing and ghost estates around Ireland, and the frustration of coming face to face with abandoned properties that could and should have been homes. Further moved by the writings of Gaston Bachelard and his philosophical exploration of home and other spaces as shelters for dreaming, Selina’s work echoes this sense of longing and home sickness for a personal sanctuary yet to be discovered.
With digital photography, collage, and cyanotype print, Selina pieces together these fragments of daydreams and imaginations of spaces that could have been someone’s corner of the world, but instead are now long forgotten and left decaying.

Metamorphosis

In her latest work, through ideas of metamorphosis of the human-animal, she explores the ideas of suppression of the human condition and the dehumanising nature of contemporary society in which she observes a disconnect between the fulfilment of human needs and the way of our everyday lives.

This project draws inspiration from Franz Kafka’s ‘Metamorphosis’, and dives into a personal interaction of the piece, exploring the themes of mental health, development from adolescent to young adult, and family dynamics. Through the use of text, animation, video, and the use of animal imagery, Selina aims to capture the feelings of the other, the dehumanised, the neglected. The animal acts as a bridge between the human and the alienation felt by people who struggle with mental health. Yet, instead of using a vermin as a visual metaphor for the struggle as originally in the story of ‘Metamorphosis’, Selina chose to use the imagery of a cat.
