Na Sléibhte Bruscair

My work encompasses the issue of landfill, highlighting how a multitude of closed landfill sites are scattered around Ireland; mounds of rubbish hidden in plain sight. My work draws attention to these concealed rubbish mountains by framing satellite images of them in traditional patchwork patterns and using scraps of collected ‘waste’ materials.

The textile industry is the second largest polluter in the world, producing 15.1 million tons of waste annually. I am adapting the time long tradition of patchwork, whereby scraps of fabric are recycled and sewn together to create a quilt.

Patchwork quilting is a community-based tradition. I am using this time long tradition to create an artist lead project, working with participants from different communities in the Limerick area. I strive to bridge the gap between the past and the present and create a parallel between our urbanized and domesticated lifestyles and an environmental crisis.
