Siobhan Martyn’s work explores our society’s relationship with social media. Through the use of imagery and text, ‘Like for a Like, Follow for a Follow’ comments on the popularisation of the “selfie generation” and its unrealistic expectation of permanent ‘perfection’, and our society’s psychological need for attention.
Siobhan’s paintings capture the viewers’ attention with bright colours, scrawled text and compelling statements. She uses the process of painting to construct and deconstruct the models face, highlighting the distorted view of both beauty and also of reality that has consumed many social media users. The statements create a dialogue between the painting and the viewer that demands them to assess the impact of social media on our society in this post-truth era.
