Laura Sweeney’s painting practice is inspired by a now dilapidated house which was of sentimental significance and where she spent a lot of her childhood. This site specific project gave her the freedom to explore different avenues touching on her memories, curiosities and feelings surrounding this site located in Aughavas, County Leitrim. She expresses these feelings and thoughts through her amplified colour palette and exaggerated architectural structures, creating a time warp. Her work is very atmospherically and creates an unnerving sense of tension and eeriness. She has rejuvenated this derelict building and its surroundings by creating them in to several different unique stylised creations. She managed to do this by abstracting and deconstructing its physical form disrupting the space by merging and layering of paint creating a depth of field and using perspective to draw the viewer in. Placing all the unique paintings alongside each other she has managed to create her own dystopian world.
