The Woman Question

The concept for my graduate collection is derived from my ongoing appreciation for the feminist movement, due in part to the influence of my predominantly female family. This comes at a crucial time in society, as general elections in many countries, including ours, see female candidates for higher office as a real possibility. However, many have not been successful. Can we say that, as a world, men and women are equal when these injustices persist?
Through the combination of drape, pattern cutting and an innovative cut, I will create a collection with a tailored, structured silhouette. Fabrics such as duchess satin, lace, denim, and men’s suiting materials create a clean and crisp collection with a muted colour story of white, black, and grey, with hints of pink to bring in a sense of femininity. I have elevated the chosen fabrics with contemporary and unique fabric treatments such as screen printing and deconstruction.

Remake Project

Our first garment, created in Fourth Year, is a part of our Pattern Drafting and Garment Construction classes. In the Remake Project, we are all required to choose a look from the collection of another designer. Alexander McQueen has always been one of my favourite designers, specifically for his work in tailoring, but also for his way of draping and use of the human form. I chose my look for this project based on the need for both 2D and 3D work; flat pattern drafting was only half the job, as draping on the mannequin and readjusting accordingly completed the look. I also chose it for its structured nature, wanting to explore engineering more complex garments with a more defined shape, whereas previously I had worked with softer, more vague shapes.
