For my collection I took inspiration from the Chinese New Year festival which is the largest festival in the Asian culture and it’s also celebrated worldwide each year. I was very interested in learning about different cultures asides from my own which is Nigeria. I decided to base my main concept on a specific animal which was the elephant. Although the elephant was’nt too common in the Asian culture but it was celebrated back in 2021.
The elephant symbolises happiness which drew me in even more while researching and Another reason why I chose the elephant was the shape and structure which is what I wanted my collection to be based on. The event from the Chinese New Year is also known as the spring festival in China as it’s marked as the fifteenth day celebration. While learning more about the culture I decided to cross reference my concept which brought to the Indian culture as the elephant big element and representation during their festival which is known as Diwali.
The reason I chose this theme was because I wanted something different and new that had a lot of deeper meaning while researching. I wanted to explore more of the Asian culture and really dive deep into their tradition that represents who they are as a tribe.
Alternative Collection
My alternative collection is based on contemporary africanism which is all about the transformation of African fabrics into western outfits as well as introducing African motifs and symbols to the western designs.
