To What Extent Can Visual Literacy Be Developed Through Artist and Peer Engagement During the Creation of Illustrated Stories in a Comic Book Format?
Through this action research project, the aim for me as a teacher was enabling students to understand the importance of local artists within their community, the value of local culture through storytelling and what can be achieved with creativity and enhanced literacy skills, including oral, aural and visual literacy.
Local artists have had a huge part to play in inspiring me as a growing artist and teacher, stemming from an island community where tradition and culture are embedded in the beating heart, where the seasons meet with traditions and music. I grew up knowing the importance of deeply emotional ‘Sean-nós’ songs that tell a haunting story, also the value and appreciation of mythology and folklore. These are precious gifts passed on by previous generations, painting pictures through Songs and stories.
The research examines the recent initiatives and implementations of Arts-in-Education within the curriculum in primary and post primary schools, more specifically the implementation of an artist into the classroom in secondary schools. Exploring the way in which a visiting artist can benefit learners in practical skills and process in the sketchbook. Furthermore, the research discovers how comic book formatted illustrative panels can enhance visual literacy skills.
