As part of any art project, the creator immerses themselves into the work. As an art educator the same applies when teaching. Witnessing student’s work grow from day 1 of meeting them to the final day of making art has shown me creativity, enthusiasm and commitment were the back bones of these student’s work. Allowing freedom to happen in the classroom and enabling students’ confidence grow is how these works of art were so well executed by the end of each project.
Work from 1st and 5th year students is shown here. 1st years created cubist self-portraits and transformed their paintings into cardboard sculptures before making clay pieces in response. 5th year students explored the idea of how social media effects the lives of young people today. They each responded personally to the brief and participated in critical reviews in class to evolve their work. Their work was the focus for my research project; “How can the pedagogical approach to classroom critique impact students’ critical thinking and concept development in the art room?” My findings indicated that the teacher’s role in orchestrating the critical reviews was vital for enabling students to self-assess their work and execute their work to a higher standard.
