“Beneath the surface”

Margaret O’ Connell’s work aims to look in-depth at the various unnoticed features of Ireland’s beaches and the natural matter discovered underwater, seaweed being is the focal inspirtation of the work.

The research process began by visiting the beach, taking time to observe the environment, noting points of interest and capturing images on film and digital cameras to document the visuals. In addition, found materials are collected along with a variety of seaweed, focusing on textures, colour and shape.

Her multi disciplinary practice includes photography, ceramics and print exploring the natural form and structure of seaweed and its importance to the environment. The series of embossed etchings which using copper sulfate plates, capture the abstract and intricate forms of the ocean kept greenery.

The series of porcelain paper clay tiles were created using castings from gathered seaweed, directly connecting the material with the process of creation.
