The Outside Perspective of the Skateboarding Subculture

My work is shot from the viewpoint of a bystander in Limerick’s skateboarding subculture, capturing occurrences that aren’t typically covered in skateboarding’s online representation. My goal is to show my audience that this subculture embraces all of the virtues of dedication and community, and to portray these people in our city as such. This work attempts to depict “moments in between,” such as preparation, a sense of belonging, and community. Another part of the work that the audience may identify is the urban spots that they frequent; both the skate community and possibly average Limerick city residents may recognize these locations and hence feel linked to the piece. I used a combination of cell phone photography, photoshop, light projection, and tracing to create these paintings. The artworks are all oil on canvas.
