Reflecting Reed

Originally from Cork and now based in County Clare, Judy Prendergast brings a strong foundation in graphic design to her contemporary expanded painting and printmaking practice. Following a long career in visual communication, she has recently returned to formal study and is undertaking a Fine Art degree in Painting, marking a significant new phase in her artistic development.

The landscapes of the west of Ireland, particularly its lakes, are central to her work. She is drawn to the mutable qualities of water, ts stillness and movement and uses this focus to explore the subtle interplay of light, atmosphere, and reflection. Moving between representation and abstraction, observation and sensation, her work seeks not to depict the landscape literally but to evoke its essence, often through quiet, transient moments such as shifting light on water.

Laser cutting plays a key role in her process, functioning as both a generative and mark making tool within her print based approach. This is complemented by an ongoing investigation into Japanese sumi ink drawing, which introduces a sensitivity to gesture, rhythm, and tonal restraint. Together, these methods create works with a distinct sense of balance and refinement. Her transition from graphic design to fine art has fostered a renewed engagement with materiality and process, resulting in work that invites viewers to pause and reconnect with the natural environment as an immersive, emotional experience.
