Adam Dillons’ work centers around capturing a city’s architecture while simultaneously altering it through the use of light and angles. His work creates a sense of unordinary out of the ordinary. By using Limericks’ buildings as the focal point of his paintings, he highlights his surroundings that would have otherwise been ignored. Being from a small village in Adare surrounded by picturesque, thatched cottages, Limerick city’s architecture has always intrigued him due to its stark contrast. Painting these various buildings allows him to gain a sense of control over his surroundings in turn becoming less of an act of voyeurism but adoration for a city that allowed him to grow not only as an artist but as an individual.
He works exclusively with oil on canvas and makes studies on paper. Each painting uses buildings from architectural angles to guide the viewer to the point of importance within the work. This being where the light shines the brightest, this is the point in which you become not only a viewer but a participant in the painting in itself joining the scene. It’s this atmosphere of unwilling familiarity he wishes to evoke within every painting. While the colors are at times abstract, the context isn’t, remaining a pillar of which allowing understanding to flourish and a deeper connection to be felt with the piece.
