Transitioning

My work is an exploration of the virtual gaming platform ‘Second Life’. Inspired by ideas of science fiction writings of Neal Stephenson together with the current research off Ray Kurzweil and his theories of Singularity and his predictions on the potential future of technology. Kurzweil predicts that within the next 20 years humans potentially will begin to merge with technology, becoming more software based, and become capable of uploading themselves to a more realistic version of Second Life. As Kurzweils high accuracy rate with prediction, and this proposed idea of immortality lead me to beginning my Second Life

By Immersing myself in the digital world, I communicated with other ‘Second Lifers’, and learning and adapting to their way of life. I propose this idea of immortality to them, and learn whether they would consider this possibility to be heaven-like or hell. Through the use of post cards and other media of communication, inspired by my own experiences and conversations whilst living in Second Life, I create a dialogue between myself and the my virtual self. My work bridges the gap between the virtual and the organic.
