You're the Image of Your Mother

You’re the Image of Your Mother is an immersive installation built around a series of recorded car journeys shared between Caoimhe Keenan and her mother. In each reenactment, Keenan performs both roles simultaneously, lip-syncing to those recordings, finding the space where what’s funny and what’s uncomfortable are often the same thing.

Keenan’s work centres on her Irish Catholic mother and the relationship between them; how they mirror each other in the way they speak, behave, and respond. She is interested in those small, repeated patterns, what is learned and what might be uniquely hers: where one person ends and the other begins. Her techniques, appliqué, embroidery and felting, are slow and repetitive by nature, demanding the same quality of attention that relationships require. Her large textile pieces frequently incorporate sound and video, attuned to the comic unease that runs through the familial everyday
