Connection // Disconnection

In June 2021 I chained a camera to my local swimming cove and invited others to use this camera. The results of this initial participatory project inspired the body of work made for this show as I was interested in the two-sided participation, the stranger taking the photograph and those anonymously captured and how the photos often highlighted the widely shared experience of having a connection with the sea.

I am fascinated with our connection and relationship with the sea. Using primary research like a postcard exchange project (2020-2022) I began to amass a collection of shared memories relating to the sea from people around Ireland. This research highlighted the multifaceted meaning we as a collective take from the sea. Thus, this project explores themes that have arisen from this research, using various mediums, I explore both personal and collective concepts of this relationship, exploring themes of connection: with ourselves, nature, and others as well as opposing experiences of grief, isolation, and disconnection.
