Places of Memory

“Space defines landscape, where space combined with memory defines place.” – The Lure of the Local by Lucy R Lippard.

The fluid space of memory, influenced by time, place and experience is what my practice is about. I look at how a place holds a memory. This information comes to the surface and fades away: some of this information we remember from actual experiences or sense from some source, but other information we recall has a deeper and unexplainable origin. Be it our home, a restaurant, a beach or a certain spot on a hill these places can trigger the memory of an experience, a conversation or event we have had. Memories are fragile pieces in our minds. Constantly changing, fading and coming back. After the actual living of an event, we often change and mold the memory. I use photography and video to capture places that hold my own and other’s memories. Because our memories are so intertwined with language I like to explore the importance of words, and sentences. The text I use creates a story and evokes memories in the viewers.
