I work with a range of multi-disciplinary processes including painting, sculpture, photography and video. I am very interested in the nature of how these approaches are combined through exploring issues of display and thereby generating a more dynamic dialogue between works.
My work investigates the (possible) vaulting ambition of technological progression. This progression is examined through language as the primary means of learning and development. In the last few years we have seen a huge development in digital technologies which seem to be on the verge of self-aware artificial intelligence. All digital technology is based in code language. Once the superficiality is removed from a program such as Darpa’s Deep Mind AI Project, which is just a means for the creators or public to visualise the changes which are taking place, all that remains is this coded language.
We are seeing the birth of something which imitates human life, and so are reminded of our own development. This is seen in the reference to the tower of Babel in the story of Genesis. We can also consider the development of language on a more personal level, which gives rise to the motifs of the chalkboard and whiteboard which are typically associated with school. The motif of walking can also be seen throughout the work. Walking can be interpreted symbolically as a metaphor for progression or literally as a means of getting from a place one begins to somewhere else.
