Mark’s work revolves around places in his local area that are old and dilapidated, some of them real historical locations that were once public places that people used to gather around. One of the elements he wanted to show through his work are the different stages of time at these locations, showing things that happened or to do with the area and showing how they have changed throughout the many years they have been around, while representing it in his own abstract style. There were many different artists and art styles that have influenced this work, pop art and surrealism in particular are two art styles that he feels have had an influence on his work.
In pop art, material is sometimes visually removed from its known context, isolated or combined with unrelated material, this is something he finds really interesting and he has incorporated into his work. Surrealism has a place in this work because of its touch of oddity and its mix of the dream world with the real world and Mark feels his work is almost like a representation of memories and dreams.
