Semblance

This project is an investigation of the female body. Consisting of casts made from the hands and feet of three generations of the artists family. Through these three women the artist developed work exploring themes such as heritage, communication and deterioration. The sculptures are made from dental wax and fabric. The decision to use dental wax derived from the theme of communication and the difficulty of miscommunication within the family.

The wax original uses were to mould the mouth, which is the primary communication tool of humans. The hands enable people to work while The feet support the entire weight of the human body. These sculptures were placed in a number of significant locations relevant to the artists family, such as the home, the bog and the garden. The dilapidation home was originally occupied by the artist’s grandmother from the 1920s until the 1950s. This home reflects deterioration. The artist chose to display the work in a bog. Originally from a rural background, The bog and farmland is the site of work. The final setting for the photographs was the garden. The glasshouse is a symbol of the fragile nature of a home. The flora of the garden represents growth and development within the family.
