My degree show project is an abstract realist take on the decaying architecture of Our Lady’s Hospital in Ennis Co. Clare. With the personal connection of my granddad, Terrence Quinn, having been a patient there, and with myself currently being a student in a former Magdalene Laundry’s building, I wanted to pay homage to the dark history of both buildings that our Irish society neglects to talk about. The main feature of my works has been based around the windows, as both buildings have sash windows, this makes the connection between Our Lady’s and the Good Shepard visually easier to understand. As my work has progressed for the degree show a strong sense of manic ideas can been seen through the works, starting off simple and then causing states of dizziness as more of the rooms become visible, as a step taken back from the window and trapping the viewer more into the building itself. The windows do not show a clear sight to the outdoor scene, this is to add to the sense of being trapped.
